04/03/2012 Health and Wellness in Fairfield’s Kitchens | Organic and Sustainable Living by Afterglow Photos

People of all ages packed into the hallways and rooms of Fairfield Warde High School this weekend for the 3rd Annual Food For Thought Expo that inspired and motivated a community on Saturday, March 31st.  The Food for Thought Expo, sponsored by the Fuel for Learning Partnership (FFLP), a Fairfield PTA Committee, featured local exhibitors, vendors, and services that help to make good eating habits part of every meal.  Children and adults had the chance to get up close and personal with healthy foods, farm-to-table cooking presentations, and resources teaching them how to easily incorporate these methods into their homes, schools and daily lives.

Two of my friends happen to volunteer their time for the FFLP through the Fairfield PTA and they had asked if I’d be interested in volunteering my photography for this great event.  Hearing the goals of the event, I knew it was a right fit immediately.  My oldest child is in Kindergarten right now, and she refuses to buy school lunch, which means I am packing it every night.  It’s a challenge to come up with creative ways to feed her and to feed our family with all of the confusion of naming, labeling and packaging of healthy food vs. non.  Right now parents are getting mixed messages about what food is actually good for their families.  There’s a lack of transparency regarding what is in our food (i.e. pink slime in chicken nuggets and GMOs to name a few), issues with food safety and increasing food allergies in our classrooms, which are clearly diet-related health problems that need to be addressed and understood.  Parents just want to feed their kids right, and they want it to be easy, affordable and accessible.  The Food for Thought Expo was designed with this desire in mind, providing access to local farmers and healthy businesses and professionals, as well as cooking demonstrations and workshops.

I witnessed the Fairfield community coming together to take part in these educational activities, in a relaxed school setting, supporting our local businesses, and fueling our minds and bodies.  Some of the highlights included sampling foods and beverages from local vendors such as Planet Fuel, Izzi B’s Allegen-Free Cupcakes, Simmons Family Farm, Brookside Farm Maple Syrup, Robeks, Whole Foods, Wave Hill Breads, Catch a Healthy Habit, Fairfield Bread Company, The Farmer’s Cow, Health in a Hurry and Skinny Pines.

I sat in on a chat with Didi Emmons, a chef and author of Wild Flavors: One Chef’s Transformative Year Cooking From Eva’s Farm, who provided insightful inspiration towards living a sustainable life with demonstrations and a taste of wild flavors.

Many participated in a cooking demo with Amie Guyette Hall, of From Your Inside Out, who gave the crowd clear action steps and resources for healthy living and “Kickin’ Cancer in the Kitchen”, and Linda Soper-Kolton, of Green Gourmet to Go, who provided delicious Meatless Monday ideas to please the whole family.

There were some great kid activities and learning centers focusing on healthy lunch ideas with kid-appeal, and displays encouraging balanced meals of whole grains, beans and veggies all to touch and explore.  Young and old participants could compare the sugar content in fruit snacks, milks, cereals and more of their childhood favorites.

In every hall you could speak with local farmers or CSA’s on how to support sustainable foods, herbs and living in our area  such as Sport Hill Farm, Stone Gardens Farm, Wakeman Town Farm, Red Bee Honey, Moorefield Herb Farm, Graze and more.

Cookbooks were available for those who wanted to read up on the various topics, continue their learning or bring home some recipes, and cooking equipment was also on hand thanks to the Fairfield University Bookstore, Kitchen Corner, and the Fairfield Public Library.

It has been a long time since I’ve stood in the lunch line at school. ;-) This time around, as a parent with a child in the school system, it was very different and educational.  Fairfield Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services Department members served some of their healthful and yummy school-made foods such as vegetarian chili, yogurt parfait (nut-free) and fruit slaw, all options on the elementary, middle and high school menus.  These lunch ladies (as we used to call them) were very kind and cared about what they were doing.  Their team was awarded with new food processors (hooray!) thanks to the PTA, Whole Foods, Cuisinart, Kitchen Corner and FFLP during the expo, so they can continue their efforts of fueling our children with healthy and delicious foods so they can reach their maximum learning potential!

The Expo was a great way to learn and see so many people come together to support each other and the efforts of our schools, health educators, local businesses and community.  I was happy to see the positive improvements in school nutrition and menu options, and so very thankful that we have knowledgeable people working for the continued change to things like GMOs, pink slime and additives in our school foods and beyond.  There is progress being made and change for the better in Fairfield.  I cannot thank the Fuel for Learning Partnership enough for doing everything in their power to make sure that I have the resources I need at my fingertips.  I can bring up healthy and conscious children, while shopping locally and with sustainable businesses now that I know where to go and who to support.  I hope everyone in the area checks out the Expo next year, and that more parents will support the Fuel for Learning Partnership on Facebook to get updates and learn more – I know I will!

01/10/2011 100% Recycled Paper and Card Products | Environmentally Conscious Photography by Afterglow Photos

Those of you who know Sarah and her Dad, know that she gets a bit of her recycling madness from him.  She recycles anything she can, and often gets frustrated that the garbage collectors don’t accept more in those handy little blue bins. Seriously, it is so easy to do now a days and we’re not sure why more people don’t find it imperative and a necessity? We are all so busy and everyone makes excuses about time, but it only takes a few seconds or minutes a day to be more conscious of our planet, our health and our futures.

So recently, we received a call from a relative of one of our clients and this call got us thinking. You see, this lovely lady wanted a photo that we took of her family at a recent wedding so she could get it printed for her holiday cards.  We explained her options for digital file purchasing or perhaps she would want us to design and print a card for her?  We were flexible, but she had wanted to use a printer that only used 100% recycled paper for her cards.  Not a problem, we offer this and it is right up our alley!  We’ve been offering recycled and earth friendly products for some time now.  Then it got us thinking that not everyone knows about this!!  So, we wanted to put it out there on the blogosphere that we offer 100% recycled paper for our press printed card stock and photo announcements, and the paper is beautiful!  It has a matte finish, and here’s the card we designed and printed for our environmentalist friend including the FSC and 100% recycled logos on it. (Thank you for coming to us to do this, we truly appreciate your business!)
afterglowphotos recycledpapwe blog1 100% Recycled Paper and Card Products | Environmentally Conscious Photography by Afterglow Photos

A while back we had decided that we wanted to take some steps to be environmentally conscious and to minimize the negative impact our small business had on the environment.  Most people are aware that with printed photos there are chemicals in the processing, but this is thought of much less in this digital age.  So we searched for a printing partner that could help us with offering a variety of papers, conscious products and photo processing, as well as packaging.  We found WHCC and quite simply – we love them!  WHCC is a fully certified Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) printer with a chain-of-custody certificate. Pictured below is an FSC certified log with stamp of approval photographed by © Eric Goethals / FSC.
afterglowphotos recycledpaper blog2 100% Recycled Paper and Card Products | Environmentally Conscious Photography by Afterglow Photos

WHCC not only practices earth-friendly internal procedures, but they help us to produce our orders minimizing the impact that manufacturing processes, printing and packaging materials have on the environment with the least amount of waste possible.  Through WHCC, we offer a range of press product papers that feature recycled content and are FSC certified. We offer Art Recycled paper, a FSC certified paper made from 100% post-consumer waste paper, that is made with a carbon neutral and wind powered offset production process. We also offer a Standard Semi-Gloss paper which is FSC certified and contains 50% recycled content (40% pre-consumer and 10% post-consumer).

WHCC also helps us by using the latest HP Indigo digital printing presses that feature an onboard waste-oil recycling system. We think it’s great that these HP Indigo printed products can be fully de-inked, so when our customers are done with them the products can easily enter the recycling stream.  The photo below shows a tree nursery (just one of the proud few) for an FSC certified forest in Mexico photographed by © Erik Goethals / FSC.
afterglowphotos recycledpaper blog3 100% Recycled Paper and Card Products | Environmentally Conscious Photography by Afterglow Photos

If that wasn’t enough, the corrugated cardboard boxes that WHCC uses for packaging and shipping are also environmentally friendly. The boxes are made from well-managed and sustainable forests under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). Corrugated cardboard is also easily recyclable through your recycler or on your own. By using unbranded and brown boxes, they are encouraging us to re-use the boxes for business shipments, or personally for family or friends across the world!

We certainly hope that you find this post useful and helpful in case you are looking for a top-notch professional printing partner or if you are curious as to how photographers and business owners, like Afterglow Photos, can do their part by being environmentally conscious in today’s world.  It’s 2011 and we encourage you to take part in the change in your community, in your town or business, or even in your home.  We are all responsible and one of the few things we can count on in life…is change.  So let’s embrace change in the New Year, and make the world a better place for our children and their children…one tree at a time.

You can feel good when you purchase a book from our Earth Collection by Couture Books because you are making a difference for our planet!

We often get asked, are you earth friendly photographers and how can a photographer go “green”?  Well, providing incredible albums such as these is just one of the many ways.  Here’s how we’ve decided to implement eco-friendly practices into our Fairfield County business, furthering the green economy and a healthy planet.

    • Afterglow Photos always recommends purchasing local, seasonal, and reused items or services for events.
    • We are big fans of Etsy, and did you know that you can find your local vendors for things like custom jewelry, decor and more on there?
    • We’ve also recommended finding items on Ebay or Craigslist, such as high-end wedding or bridesmaid dresses that are preserved and ready to be reused for the next person to wear!
    • Our backyard studio, which is used mainly for children and families, is pesticide free so our clients can rest assured knowing that their children are safe from harsh chemicals.
    • We have eliminated hazardous lab materials and chemicals from the premises.
    • We are also a 100% digital studio, which has enabled us to reduce our shipping and transportation costs.
    • We ask our labs to bundle our orders for shipping.
    • When packaging our shipments, we reuse the packing materials and boxes we were sent earlier just to save on waste.
    • We always recycle in our homes and studio – it is a must!
    • Our lights are on timers and they are shut off when we are not using them. Plus, we’ve switched out all the old light bulbs with new energy efficient ones!
    • When possible, we use high capacity rechargeable batteries.
    • 95% of our props were purchased locally or at thrift shops around Fairfield County.
    • Whenever traveling into NYC or doing business in other major cities, we find a way to take the train to work!
    • We encourage the electronic delivery of images through online galleries and proofing.
    • We print less and e-mail more!
    • Our business cards and press products are printed on recycled paper provided by WHCC.
    • We encourage clients to *only* print the photos they want to display prominently in their households.

Your friends at Afterglow Photos pride themselves on being socially responsible, and we wanted to share a few tips on planning a “green” event.

    1. Go paperless. Use the web or e-mail to send Save-the-Dates and Invitations.
    2. Carpool.  Arrange group transportation whenever possible, your guests and the earth will appreciate it.
    3. Pour organic.  Find certified organic wine, sparkling wine or champagne.
    4. Buy local.  Work with farmers markets for your flowers, or caterers who utilize local farms and sustainable food products in their menu.
    5. Donate local.  Search for a local shelter or organization that can use the leftover or unused food.
    6. Reuse.  Purchase clothing, jewelry or decor that has been used and produced locally or in your country.
    7. Reduce.  Eliminate unnecessary waste by using cloth napkins, glass and plate dishware.

We hope you have found this article helpful, and maybe you learned a little something.  Offset your carbon footprint by being eco-conscious in your planning efforts.  “Be the change you want to see in the world.” – Mahatma Gandhi

07/16/2009 A "green" and yellow wedding | CT Wedding Photography by Afterglow Photos

Morgan and John’s wedding was one of our favorites this year.  It was an eco-friendly wedding and was filled with yellow themes and punchy colors, with classic navy or seersucker thrown in for style.  Think “Vineyard Vines” meets farmer market chic!  We met up with the guys in the bridal party for a few photos before we hoped on the yellow school bus to the event site.  The bride and groom chose the incredible outdoor location of the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, CT for the tented reception and ceremony overlooking the water.  Gorgeous — that about sums it up!

pagliaro paintcanvas A "green" and yellow wedding | CT Wedding Photography by Afterglow Photos We thought this was such a great idea and a fresh twist on the signature frame matte you see often!  The ceremony took place along side of the CT River, and it was such a beautiful setting!  Doesn’t this yellow color rock?!  The wildflowers just POP off the backdrop of the dresses!  Morgan is so good with the details, and she really wanted her earth-friendly elements to show throughout the day.  The flowers were inspired from a local farmer’s market, and their natural beauty was surpassed only by Morgan’s.
