03/06/2012 Diana and Justin’s New Haven Lawn Club Wedding | Connecticut Weddings by Afterglow Photos

Diana and Justin were looking for something different (that wasn’t your typical wedding reception space), especially since they were having both the ceremony and reception in the same location.  The New Haven Lawn Club (NHLC) really speaks for itself.  It was love at first sight once they saw those dramatic art deco chandeliers and the fireplace in the ballroom.

Diana might have had my favorite hair style this season!  It was long and natural with cascading curls, and she adorned it with a silk flower instead of a veil.  The flower would coordinate perfectly with her dress and the gorgeous belt that made it a show stopper!  Her natural looking makeup was sheer perfection too.

For their November wedding they were using cream, brown and gold colors with elegant fall details.  Diana told us from the beginning that ” I love detail photos and  sometimes they’re my favorite part” of the photos from a wedding.  One of the unique keepsakes that Diana incorporated into the details was a heart charm that was pinned to her bouquet (shown below), and pictured on the charm are her Grandparents (so they could be there in spirit).

The ambiance that they absolutely wanted to convey to their guests was intimacy, warmth and a fun spirit, which isn’t hard to do at the NHLC.  The club has so many great doorways, hallways and architectural elements that are beautiful to photograph, and then you add in a great couple, lots of candlelight and their families, and you are all set!

To keep with the color scheme and fall theme, Diana incorporated gold leaves into the invites, menu, candy apple favor tags and cake topper.  She also used a really cool art print of a tree (family tree) with their names and wedding date to replace the old guest book.  Each guest would take their finger and place it in colored ink, and then leave a print on the tree as one of the “leaves” or family members. I absolutely loved this idea!

White pumpkins, white birch tree centerpieces, rich fall toned flowers and leaves adorned the tables, fireplace and room.  Candi (the florist) did an amazing job and went above and beyond to find the very last white, mini-pumpkins in the entire state of CT (which was a challenge since we got hit with snow in October!) to make sure that every last detail went according to plan.

By the looks of Diana’s laughter and dancing, she was having the time of her life!  Justin changed into his Chuck Taylor’s and showed us his dance moves for a bit, and it couldn’t have been a more beautiful night!  Many thanks to the NHLC for taking such good care of us, and to my friend and 2nd shooter extraordinaire, Leslie Dumke, for making me laugh with her silly faces all night and for her always creative perspective! Muah! xo

03/02/2012 Pinterest for Wedding Planning – Bridal Beauty, Wedding Inspiration and Planning Resources | Wedding Planning Tips by Afterglow Photos

We’ve all been hearing a lot about the darling social media site known as Pinterest.  Yes ladies, you’ve got one more social networking site to add to your roster, but I promise – this one is different!  Pinterest users have been adding images to their virtual pinboards for inspiration to help plan their big day, collect ideas for their dream home, and to visualize their baby’s nursery and more.  I started my profile just a few weeks ago, and I found it interesting that some of the users pinning wedding or baby related content aren’t even engaged or pregnant yet but they are sharing, using images for future planning and having fun with it!  Pinterest users have become self-proclaimed “Pinaholics” and are obsessed with the Instagram-like search.

Pinterest is social media’s rising star, and it has over 10 million U.S. monthly unique users (as of Feb. 2012) even though it has been an “invitation only” site for the past two years.

Women have been flocking to the site because it is a hotbed for planning and chock full of beauty and inspiration!  You can find everything from wedding details to home decorating tips, fashion at its finest, yummy recipes, vacation and travel photos, or simply some quotes for inspiration.  Chances are that you’ve jumped on the bandwagon months ago or are wondering if you should take the plunge.  I say, go for it!  Here’s a peek at what I’ve “Pinned” and I’ve only just begun.

pinterest afterglowphotos Pinterest for Wedding Planning Bridal Beauty, Wedding Inspiration and Planning Resources | Wedding Planning Tips by Afterglow Photos

Pinterest is a young company, but its presence and impact has been felt by just about every brand and retailer nationwide and fast!  The online network lets users “pin” images to boards rather than the old method of bookmarking a single site in a browser list.  On Pinterest you can “bookmarklet” similar photos, websites or useful information into organized collections like a virtual bulletin board or scrap book for all things you love.  You can follow other lists and users, and “repin” specific items onto your boards.  The only downside I’ve found for the bride (or user) is that once your profile is public… all of it is public.  (Why can’t you hide a certain board yet?  Put “hidden board” on your list of updates Pinterest.)  So for now, if you want to hide a certain element of your wedding (like your dress design or style) that can’t be done yet so don’t put those images here.  You’ll need to leave it off of Pinterest and keep it elsewhere in your private online board, binder or similar.

Pinterest describes itself as a way to let you “share all the beautiful things you find on the web”.  When Pinterest founder Ben Silbermann was looking for an engagement ring for his girlfriend, he turned to his own product for inspiration. He found the right one on the list of a jewelry enthusiast, and pinned it to his digital board. He also used Pinterest to help plan the wedding, which is interesting too.  My initial thought (after testing out the site) was that Pinterest is perfect for wedding planning and I would definitely be interacting, sharing and getting inspired now that I figured it out.  I also love it for my dream home inspiration and as a creative and photographer, I love the visual beauty and humor that comes across my computer screen through the pins from people and brands that I follow.  Here are some of my favorite brands to follow for your wedding, home and family inspiration: Real Simple, Style Me Pretty, Etsy, The Perfect Palette, HGTV, Travel Channel, Whole Foods, ModCloth, Emmaline Bride and there are many more.

I wanted to share some simple ways for my clients and friends to get started and to get the most out of their experience.

    1. Join and follow along! Here are 7 Tips for Planning a Wedding on Pinterest and email me using the contact form if you would like to join and I’ll set you up with an invite! :-)

    2. Be social! When you set up your Pinterest account, you can connect your Twitter and Facebook accounts (if you’d like), along with your personal website. You can choose to share your Pins across the networks, or to embed them onto your wedding website, family or personal blog too!

    3. Create boards and “like” some things! When you choose to “Like a Pin”, it will appear in a separate feed from your Boards. You can keep a like list for those random pins that are interesting, make you chuckle, or are drool worthy, but those you wouldn’t necessarily dedicate a whole board to (i.e funny animal photos, a great walk-in closet, gardening ideas, a cocktail recipe for a party, etc.).

pinterest popular Pinterest for Wedding Planning Bridal Beauty, Wedding Inspiration and Planning Resources | Wedding Planning Tips by Afterglow Photos

    4. Find and follow!  Another way to find interesting Pins or Pinners is to use the “Popular” category to discover trending pins.  You can also narrow down the search, by going to the “Everything” category and searching by topic (i.e. weddings, photography or fitness). When you see a pin you like, view that pinner’s other boards, who they follow, and so on.  It might lead you to some great finds!

pinterest weddings events Pinterest for Wedding Planning Bridal Beauty, Wedding Inspiration and Planning Resources | Wedding Planning Tips by Afterglow Photos

    5. Add pins by site!  Feel free to start pinning to your collection of boards from all of your favorite websites.  These could be bridal fashion sites, planning blogs or inspiration boards, registry sites for home decor, etc.  And if you haven’t already…go to the top of your Pinterest page and click on the “Add +” tab to start using the “Pin It” button while in your browser.

    6. Credit the work of those you share!  It’s pretty simple, but it is often forgotten or ignored.  Please respect the livelihood of the artists or those who’s work you are sharing by asking permission for personal use and giving them credit where credit is due (i.e if you are sharing your engagement or wedding photos of any kind, wedding details and decor, whatever the creative project or work of art, please link to a website for credit and if there is ever any question of use just ask the creator first).

If it was your life’s work or research project or design, you’d want the credit too.  It is a matter of common courtesy.  Stealing ideas or works of art, promoting them as your own, or using copyrighted material without permission can leave you with more legal trouble than you ever imagined.  If a site has a “Pin It” button then it is safe to assume that they are happy to share and encourage you to pin their work for personal inspiration.

Now, there is a chance that you won’t be able to pin work from some of your favorite artist or creative sites.  There is a bit of an uproar going on right now in the creative community about copyright issues on Pinterest (see links below for more) and some of these artists or sites have chosen to add code that eliminates your ability to pin so they don’t lose ownership and copyright of their work.  I get it.  I truly do, and I understand their fears.  I fall in the category that agrees with the arguments, but believes that Pinterest (as a company) is going to change their ways and do right by the artistic community soon enough.  They will have to or they will feel the backlash much like Napster did, and no one wants to see that with something so great!  So, I will not be boycotting Pinterest like some want me to, instead I choose to embrace it.  I remember when businesses fought email and having a website initially, photographers fought going digital, others fought Facebook and social media in general, and they will fight this too.

As long as my work is being used in a personal way, for inspiration in planning a special event or similar (and as long my images are not cropped, altered or have the watermarks removed), I am fine with it.  Go ahead, use the “Pin It” button at the bottom of each and every one of my blog posts – you have my approval!  That includes clients from years past.  Search for your event or images on the blog and you’ll be able to pin as well.  Now, if there is an entirely different use for my photographs that is planned for editorial, commercial or other… talk to me.  Shoot me an email.  Kindly ask permission.  And always, always, provide credit.

Most of all, have fun!  Be inspired.  Plan away!  Oh and see that button down there that says “Pin It” in red? Go ahead, do it! You know you want to.  ;-)

PS – Here’s some background below on the photography (and creative community) copyright issues with Pinterest and the uproar surrounding it, if you are so-inclined to read.

    Cheers!
    Sarah

01/17/2012 Kristin and Justin’s Wedding at The Barns at Wesleyan Hills | Rustic CT Weddings by Afterglow Photos

I met Kristin and Justin about a year ago, and instantly I knew we’d have fun working together.  He was this calm, warm and friendly guy, and she was this firecracker who would keep him laughing for years to come.  I could tell instantly that he was there to protect her and make her happy.  She would make him feel “at home” and loved, with a smile on his face.  It was in their eyes.  They had that spark…

These two are an example of another successful eHarmony couple!  They got engaged almost a year ago, and began planning their rustic, fall wedding in Connecticut soon after.  There were two things that Kristin knew for sure about her wedding attire, 1) she would wear some leopard print (of course!) and 2) she would have a very long veil.  She picked the perfect shoes for incorporating the leopard print, and her veil stole the show early on in the ceremony when she was walking down the aisle with her Dad.

I recently had the opportunity to attend a bridal showcase hosted by the newly renovated Madison Beach Hotel.  Guests were treated to “Blushing Bride” cocktails and delicious hors d’oeuvres while meeting with select vendors chosen to work with the hotel. This is me, pictured below, next to my table chock full of timeless photo albums, fine art canvases and a few elegant and vintage frames from The Organic Bloom that I offer in my packages.

Much like a bride-to-be and her family, I got to taste test foods and meet with these creative and highly sought after vendors to see what they were all about.  It was so much fun and I couldn’t wait to bring them to you via the blog! The photos below introduce you to Everthine Bridal Boutique and Ambiance Luxe Wedding Designs.  Chelsea (from Everthine) and Erica (from Ambiance) were so sweet and they both have a great eye for detail! I was so sad to miss Everthine’s recent Grand Opening soiree, but I am going to be stopping by to swoon over all the gorgeous dresses very soon!  Ambiance (you’ve definitely heard of their work before) recently rebranded so take a minute to look at their new site design and please consider them for your event planning!

I was thrilled to finally meet the fabulous Josie from Beneath The Gown, and I quickly snapped a photo of this bridal robe and “something blue” that she had on display! Don’t you just see yourself wearing this pre-wedding… and on the honeymoon, while having breakfast in bed?!  Changing topics, the savory and sweet details below also come from the master chefs at the hotel, from Take The Cake in Guilford, and Given Fine Chocolates & Indulgences in Madison.  All of them absolutely delish!

A very big thank you to Beth from the Madison Beach Hotel for her wonderful work on this event and for being one of the kindest in the industry to work with.  It was so nice to meet all of the new vendors mentioned here, there were many others (friends and colleagues) that we know well, but I wanted to introduce my clients to a few new people to help with their searches.  Cheers to all of the brides and grooms-to-be that came out to say hello to Afterglow Photos, and we hope you have found your perfect vendor matches for 2012 and beyond!

10/17/2011 Bevin and Ken’s Madison Beach Hotel Wedding Sneak Peek | Connecticut Shoreline Weddings by Afterglow Photos

Their love story began when a mutual friend decided they needed to get to know each other.  They had worked together and knew who the other was, but they had never formally been introduced.  Thanks to their friend, numbers were exchanged, but Bevin knew that she would not be making the call and that he would have to take the leap.  A few weeks later Ken called, and in time they would go out to dinner.  Now normally, dinner dates would be a bit challenging when dating non-doctors as they might not appreciate their date being “on call” and needing to step away from a meal or conversation.  But this time was different.  They both happened to be “on call” this night, and since both were MDs…they got it.  Bevin and Ken might have sat at the table for no more than 10 minutes total that entire dinner, but apparently it was long enough because they have been together ever since.  Welcome to the shoreline wedding of Bevin and Ken!

afterglowphotos madisonbeac Bevin and Kens Madison Beach Hotel Wedding Sneak Peek | Connecticut Shoreline Weddings by Afterglow PhotosWhen we met last winter, Bevin had shared her love for the beach and fond memories of vacations all spent in the sand with their children.  She knew that would be the inspiration and she wanted to bring it all together with colors of navy and purple (their daughters’ favorite color) to accent the white.  She incorporated a Starfish element into the design giving it a nautical feel, and shells would be spread throughout the room and decor as well.  Take a minute to watch the slideshow and you’ll see all of the ways that Bevin brought her casual beach elegance and nautical style wedding ideas to life!  You’ll also see how important their families and the many generations were to them.  Documenting this special time for their families was a huge goal of theirs.  Their families were growing, and their children were coming together to share in the fun, new sibling excitement and more!

Madison, CT is one of my favorite places in the state.  Period.  My family lives there, so it is like my 2nd home, and when Bevin told me that her wedding would be at the *new* Madison Beach Hotel I was thrilled!  I had heard that the new building was going to be epic and would be the new hot spot along the shoreline for events, so I couldn’t wait to see!  The thing is, the week before the wedding we were hit with Hurricane (Tropical Storm?) Irene all along the CT coast and that included the beach area of town where Bevin and Ken were to say their vows.  All week we had our fingers and toes crossed so that 1) the building wouldn’t get hit to hard and 2) the beach would still be there and beautiful and 3) the entire town would get their power back (it had been out for 6 days or so).  The building made it through the storm OK, the beach was altered and the pier crushed, but the good news was that power was finally restored and we could all breathe easier again – phew!

I arrived that morning and upon meeting with Beth from the Madison Beach Hotel I was immediately put to ease because they put a true pro in charge and not only is she very good at what she does, she is also the sweetest person to work with!!  Bevin really did her homework when it came to finding all of her vendors (I love that!) and she enlisted some of the best around.  From the very beginning of the day, we worked with Amy Fiordelisi from Dana Bartone and Company for bridal beauty and she has always been a favorite of mine.  The gorgeous dress that Bevin chose was a Jenny Yoo design, adorned with an Augusta Jones sparkly belt, from The White Dress by the Shore.  Sheer perfection for a beach wedding!  The floral designs (complete with Starfish decor) were from the fabulous Candi’s Floral Creations, and the “Stylish Starfish” card designs from Wedding Paper Divas.  Later on, the crowd danced to the beats provided by Martin Foley from Rob Alberti’s DJ service, and the evening was complete with a deliciously sweet cake from Hope Wright-Martell from A Little Imagination Cakes.  Thanks for providing myself and Kim Kelly (my awesome 2nd shooter) with a day filled with gorgeous details and happy clients to photograph!

Bevin and Ken, Cheers to you both and looking forward to our fall get together soon! :-)

10/03/2011 Erin + Chaz’s Castle Wedding Sneak Peek | Connecticut Shoreline Weddings by Afterglow Photos

Their love story began around Thanksgiving of 2005.  Erin and Chaz got matched up on eHarmony.com.  After emailing back and forth, and finally talking on the phone, they had their first date at Barnes & Noble and were so engrossed in their conversation that they hadn’t realized the store was closing. Soon after, a second date occurred and they talked for 6 hours at a bar that night, leaving the tomato and mozzarella appetizer (a gift from the bartender) untouched since they both dislike raw tomatoes. Those first two dates made an impact, and sparked a feeling that just kept growing.  Through ups and downs, and amazing adventures, they learned that they work well together and they make sense.  They found the other half that they had been looking for…

billmillerscastle afterglowphotos Erin + Chazs Castle Wedding Sneak Peek | Connecticut Shoreline Weddings by Afterglow Photos

Erin and Chaz are gamblers. She plays the slots, and he plays cards. Since they got engaged at Mohegan Sun casino, they thought it was fitting to do a casino themed wedding. With a king and queen adorned cake that was made by Erin’s Mom, personalized playing cards as favors, and dice in the floral centerpieces (also a DIY project by Erin’s Mom), they had so many ideas that they could include. They also used a heart-shaped sand ceremony vase during their touching ceremony, and the “Lucky in Love” throwing bouquet (made out of scratch off tickets) for the lucky single winner to catch!  Here’s a look at their wedding day memories in the slideshow below.

Chaz and Erin were so kind and true to themselves during every step of their wedding planning and day.  They worked so hard to make sure that their guests had fun, and all of Erin and her Mother’s Do-It-Yourself elements worked perfectly.  It was such a fun reception and Chaz really stepped it up a notch when he belted out “Funky Cold Medina” on the mic to entertain all of the guests and his new wife.  Everyone circled around and cheered him on – it was certainly a highlight of the day for all!!

We got to work with some new pro’s on this day, so thanks to those of you who worked by our side to make it a success!  Beauty by Maria Dominici and hairstyling by The Hair House, dress by David’s Bridal, the casino themed creations (centerpieces, florals and cake) by Erin’s Mom, the outdoor ceremony and reception location at Bill Miller’s Castle, catering by La Luna, with music by Big Daddy from James Daniel’s Entertainment. My fabulous 2nd shooter on this day was the talented Kim Kelly, with whom I know I will always be laughing.

Erin and Chaz, It was a pleasure working with you both and I hope that the sneak peek photos brought back all of the emotion, excitement and love! :-)

09/21/2011 Lauren + Andrew’s Stamford Yacht Club Wedding Sneak Peek | Gold Coast Weddings by Afterglow Photos

Lauren and Andrew’s love story began years ago when they were growing up.  They knew each other through mutual friends but went to different Connecticut high schools.  They never really spoke, but just knew who the other was.  As their lives changed and they became working adults, Lauren had been looking to move to the West Coast.  Although she was unsuccessful at finding a job out there,  Lauren ended up finding something at a local shipping company and by chance she ran into Andrew in the hallway of the building.  She was about to find out that he worked right next door to her.  Andrew had just moved back to the states after living in Switzerland for a year and a half.  He asked her out on a date and it soon became very clear why she was not meant to live on the West Coast at this time in her life.  Her heart and her future would be right here in CT all along.

stamfordyachtclub afterglow Lauren + Andrews Stamford Yacht Club Wedding Sneak Peek | Gold Coast Weddings by Afterglow PhotosLauren and Andrew both enjoy spending their summers at the beach.  That’s why the Stamford Yacht Club worked perfectly for them, with their beautiful grounds and water views for their wedding guests to enjoy.  Lauren used a color palette of fushia (or bright pink) with silver accents.  For Lauren, I knew pink held a special place in her heart, as she had mentioned to me (when we met months ago) that she was a breast cancer survivor.  She is young and beautiful, and I seriously could not believe that she had been through this at such a young age.  But as we all know, cancer does not discriminate.  What struck me the most was her story of how she remained strong for Andrew, and how he remained by her side through every stage of this experience.  That is love folks, and the kind that brings me to tears.  So it was no surprise that I was a crying fool during the speeches at their reception (like everyone else there too).  Luckily, I can usually hide behind my lens, but at some point you need to wipe the tears and breathe.  Andrew’s words touched me too, and he reminded me of one of the many reasons why I do this work… because life is too short and because I love life and I am passionate about all kinds of love.  Every day we are given a gift to be here and to use our talents, and to love with all of our hearts.  And so my friends, I share my gift with you and hope you will treasure these moments in time because they are so very precious and beautiful.  Here’s a look at their wedding day memories in the slideshow below.

Lauren and Andrew are not defined by her battle with cancer. They ARE defined by their strength, love and commitment to each other.  I hope the photos and slideshow are proof of that and will bring many smiles to all who know them!

Many thanks to the incredible pro’s who helped bring it all together for these two.  Beauty by Tina Soleng and hairstyling by Missy West (friends of the bride), the phenomenal dress by Pronovias, the floral creations of Neilson’s Florist, the ceremony at St John’s Church in Darien and reception location at the Stamford Yacht Club, music by Jim Nuzzo from Dance to the Music Entertainment, and the beautiful and classic wedding cake by Black Forest Pastry Shop. And a big shout out to the always awesome Athena Blude for being my 2nd photographer on this event, and if you have more time please take a peek at the video made by DMO Films who provided the cinematography for Lauren and Andrew.  Very few people share their after the wedding edit with us, but these guys do and I love this style, and Matt and Mo were so great to work with!!

Lauren and Andrew, thank you for reminding us all what truly matters in life, and for allowing me this opportunity to work with you!  You will hold a special place in my heart and continue to inspire me, and I feel so honored to have witnessed your strength, love and commitment. xoxo
