10/28/2011 Maxie and Evan’s Engagement Sneak Peek | Washington, CT Photography by Afterglow Photos

Evan had been planning his proposal to Maxie.  He bought THE ring, and now he was waiting for it to arrive. His jeweler said it should arrive close to 10:30 one morning via UPS, which would give him plenty of time to show his parents and prep for the evening engagement.  That was until Evan received a phone call from his mother stating that the UPS packages for their building had already arrived and the ring was not there.  He just assumed that due to its value, the ring would be shipped a little differently than the rest of the packages so Evan was not worried.  But the day went on and still no ring.  He watched the clock pass noon, 2:00, 4:00, 6:00 and on.  It was every man’s worst nightmare, so he left work and while walking to the apartment from the subway, Evan hailed down a UPS driver who called his boss to track down the package.  At 7pm he received a call from someone at UPS sharing the good news that all the local UPS trucks were contacted, the package was found, and he should be receiving it in 20 minutes.  It finally arrived, and with little time Evan showed his parents and then he was off to propose.

“At around 8 o’clock on a Wednesday night, I met Evan and my family at a small concert on a rooftop in Manhattan.  Our plan was to meet up with a few of Evan’s coworkers after the concert a few blocks away, and then head to dinner.  We started walking, and I was not paying attention to where we were going.  Soon we approached Gramercy Park, and I happened to say, “I’ve never been inside there.”  Gramercy Park is a private park for which you need a key to enter, and there are very limited ways of getting a key beyond living in a building on the park.

aglow 111010a 0209 Maxie and Evans Engagement Sneak Peek | Washington, CT Photography by Afterglow PhotosAs we approached the gate, Evan said we should see if someone was inside to let us in.  I knew nobody would let us in even if there happened to be someone in the park.  Evan then took keys out of his pocket, and while I thought he was kidding around at first, as soon as he put a key into the lock the gate swung open and I knew something was about to happen.  We went into the park, and he gave me a wrapped box.  Inside the box was a small polished rock.  Evan explained that he took the rock off a table at a restaurant the first time we had ever talked about getting married, about 2 years earlier.  He said I could keep that rock, or trade it in for a nicer one.

aglow 111010a 0384 Maxie and Evans Engagement Sneak Peek | Washington, CT Photography by Afterglow PhotosAt this point, Evan got down on one knee, showed me the “nicer rock” (my ring) and asked me to marry him!  Of course I said yes, and never wanted to leave Gramercy Park.  It was an absolutely magical, perfect New York moment.”  I would have to agree, and I couldn’t possibly try to rewrite that moment for her so I am glad she got to share it with you all! :-)  Here’s a peek at the fun we had in Washington, CT where we did the engagement photos…

Maxie grew up spending time in the town of Washington, CT and has so many wonderful memories there.  One of her favorites is the first time that Evan visited over July 4th weekend in 2007, just a couple of weeks after they met.  We decided to visit this spot for their engagement session as it would feel like home to them and they could relax and enjoy the familiar sights and the beautiful fall foliage.  Evan and Maxie still enjoy their visits to Washington, for its beauty, tranquility, and to visit their goldfish, Cyclone (that they won at Coney Island three years ago) who now lives in a pond with his friends in this small town.

Maxie and Evan, I loved getting to know you both and spending time with your family, and I have such a great feeling about you two!!  xoxo

09/27/2011 What to Wear? | Fall 2011 Style Guide | Portrait Session Fashion Ideas from Afterglow Photos

We’ve officially entered into my favorite season in New England… known as harvest, autumn or fall.  It is a time when we pull out our fuzzy slippers, cozy on up to the hot coffee, cider or tea again, and grab our ankle boots and a soft sweater to wrap ourselves in.  We head to the “U-Pick ‘Em” orchards for apples and pumpkins and hope for some glorious foliage over the hills and valleys so we can get some incredible photo opps.  The awesomely strange or cool thing that we’ve seen in the last few years though is that our summers have been lasting longer into September and October giving us that treasured time of “Indian Summer” when it is 75-85 degrees and the air feels less humid and more crisp while it warms the skin.  For those of us (photographers) who are still in the midst of our wedding season and also working on engagement or family portraits, it makes for a beautiful time to photograph and capture the comforts of the season.

So what do you wear this time of year, when the temps are wacky and it can be 65 or 85 degrees on any given day?  I hope that the following guides will give you a better idea of how to plan accordingly and still look stylish and like yourselves for those sessions.  Remember, the days of everyone wearing all black t-shirts or all white button down shirts and jeans/khaki’s are behind us.  That was much more of a late 1990′s thing.  Now you can coordinate yourselves and bring out your personalities with your clothing and play up on the colors of the season or the colors that you decorate with in your home!  If those portrait session photos will hang on your wall, then why not accent some of the colors in that particular room or hallway display with your clothing pictured?!  You’ll see what I am talking about in these examples…

afterglowphotos whattowear fall5 What to Wear? | Fall 2011 Style Guide | Portrait Session Fashion Ideas from Afterglow PhotosThe shops mentioned (below each picture) are your easy to find a sale (and/or shop online if you need to) stores.  Some of the pants, shoes and/or items you might already own so adding an accessory or a new shirt might be simple enough to do.  I’m a visual person so just seeing how things can work together help me with ideas or concepts, so I hope you will come up with your own color scheme or pairings and have fun with it too!!  Remember, there is no need to break the bank here folks, but keep in mind that these photographs might be displayed for generations (they are your heirlooms and keepsake items!) and one day your own kids or grandchildren might look at these with such pride.

I hope this helped some of you already planning ahead, and I am really looking forward to having a blast on my October and November sessions coming up all across New England and the Tri-State area and to seeing some gorgeous foliage and breathtaking landscapes with you too. :-)

Happy Fall from the Afterglow Photos family!! xoxo

PS – Many thanks to fellow photog, Corina Neilsen, for her help with this!
